The ancient temple houses Chenrizig or “Avolokiteshwara,” an 11-headed thousand-armed manifestation as its central statue. We believe that the protecting Deity for the Thimphu Valley is housed there which is why this monastery is frequented by all residents to mark key milestones in life for blessings, prayers, and successful new ventures. Many newborns are taken there by parents to be named by the presiding abbot/lama.

One of our favourites is the scenic and invigorating 8km Thimphu-Phajoding Trail. This amazing trail ascends gradually through thick blue pine forests and takes about 3 hours of consistent walking. Phajoding Mountain is famous for its monastery and is located at an altitude of 3,870m from where you’ll be treated to a stunning bird’s eye view of the entire Thimphu valley. Phajoding’s sparse population consists mostly of monks and devotees who meditate in caves nearby. Not only can you visit the temple and hermitages, but the locals are also very hospitable and will offer a glimpse into rural life. An overnight campsite is possible too should you wish to linger – And if so, you might as well hike up the mountain further to the magnificent lakes!

As a pilgrimage landmark, it is now a focal point for all Buddhists around the world to come and offer prayers. The gorgeous panoramic view of Thimphu valley also draws photographers for sunrise captures, and residents on a daily basis who exercise and walk up the mountain. By car, it is less than a 10 minute drive away from The Pema.

This particular chorten is one of Thimphu’s most beloved landmarks and is frequented daily by hundreds of Bhutanese, especially elders who can be found circumambulating the stupa throughout the day. You’ll meet locals from all walks of life sharing warm and positive energy around the temple and in the perimeter gardens. A must-visit while in Thimphu – and just under a half-hour walk away from The Pema.

National Library

With its rare collections of ancient documents, sacred religious manuscripts, scriptures and also the world’s largest published book “Bhutan: A Visual Odyssey Across the Last Himalayan Kingdom” the National Library is still one of Thimphu’s hidden treasures.

Folk Heritage Museum

The Folk Heritage Museum, housed in a 3 storied 19th century mud-rammed constructed traditional house with artifacts from all over Bhutan, captures rural life which is still predominant in most parts of the kingdom. The museum also has a great little Bhutanese restaurant that serves all local dishes and featuring only organic ingredients!

Zorig Chusum

Literally translated as the “School of the 13 Traditional Arts and Crafts,” the Zorig Chusum is always an interesting visit for those who enjoy art. An essential part of Bhutan’s cultural heritage is the traditional and visual 13 arts and crafts, including wall painting, sculpting, wood carving, paper making, masonry, weaving, embroidery and applique, casting, cane and bamboo weaving, metal ornament making, bronze casting, blacksmithing, and woodturning. What we value about this school is that it provides critical vocational training to preserve these ancient traditions, and classes are usually open to visitors to observe and interact with students and instructors, making it a fun experience for everyone. The school also has a quaint little shop where you can pick up a memorable souvenirs too!.
