CHANGANGKHA LHAKHANG
Changangkha Monastery built in the 12th Century, is one of our capital’s oldest monasteries and is visible from the 5th Floor as it is perched on a small hilltop next door, just a minute’s walk away from The Pema.
The ancient temple houses Chenrizig or “Avolokiteshwara,” an 11-headed thousand-armed manifestation as its central statue. We believe that the protecting Deity for the Thimphu Valley is housed there which is why this monastery is frequented by all residents to mark key milestones in life for blessings, prayers, and successful new ventures. Many newborns are taken there by parents to be named by the presiding abbot/lama.
